Landmine Bar vs Olympic Bar: What Changes
An Olympic barbell is built to be loaded on both ends and held with two hands. A landmine bar is built to be loaded on one end and held by one hand right behind the plates. That one difference changes the length, the weight, where the knurling sits and how thick the grip is. We built the Spann Bar around it. Here is what changes, figure by figure, using the IWF men's bar as the reference.

What an Olympic bar is built for
The IWF specification for a men's competition bar is 86.6 inches long, 44 pounds before a plate goes on, with a 28 mm shaft and a 16.3 inch loadable sleeve on each end. The knurling sits in the middle of the shaft, cut for two hands. Everything about it assumes a rack, two loaded ends and a symmetrical lift.
It is a superb bar. It was not designed to be stuck in a sleeve. Load one into a landmine and you are using a tool built for a different job: the far end sticks out a long way, the plates sit a forearm from your hand, and the knurling is nowhere near where you hold it. We watched athletes work around that for years in our gym before we did anything about it.
What changes on a bar built for the sleeve
The Spann Bar loads on one side only. The loadable sleeve is 7.5 inches, and the knurling sits at the end of that sleeve, where one hand holds it. That is the whole idea: the grip is right behind the plates instead of a forearm away from them.
Because the bar is not carrying a second loaded end, it does not need an Olympic bar's length or weight. We make five sizes. They run from 77.0 to 94.1 inches and from 15.5 to 43 pounds. Four of them use a 25 mm grip; the 43 lb Spann Bar uses 28.5 mm. Every size is rated to 550 pounds, fits a standard 2-inch landmine sleeve, and is finished in electrophoretic black paint over heavy-duty steel.

Why the grip diameter matters
A standard Olympic bar's 28 mm shaft is the men's competition size. The 25 mm grip on the Fresh, Melo, Velencia and Hybrid bars is the standard women's barbell grip size, and it is more accessible for smaller hands. That is a real difference for youth athletes and for anyone new to landmine work, which is why those are the sizes we start beginners on at SPS Fit.
The bar is built for athletes, not for any specific gender. Pick the grip that fits your hand and the weight that fits the work.
Which size
Fresh, 15.5 lb and 77.0 in: youth athletes, rehab, beginners, high-rep work. Melo, 25 lb and 78.4 in: speed work, agility, youth athletes, light conditioning. Velencia, 34 lb and 87.0 in: most athletes, general training, home gyms. Spann Bar 2 Hybrid, 37 lb and 94.1 in: the flagship length with the lighter 25 mm grip. Spann, 43 lb and 94.1 in with the 28.5 mm grip: the flagship, for advanced lifters, heavy landmine work and commercial gyms.
If you are unsure, the Velencia is the most versatile pick for adult athletes. It is the one we point most people to.
How it sets up
You need a landmine attachment and standard Olympic plates. The Spann Bar replaces the Olympic barbell most people already use in their landmine; everything else stays the same. This is how we set it up on our own floor.
- Seat the bar
Seat one end of the bar in a standard 2-inch landmine sleeve: sleeve-mounted, rack-mounted or a corner setup. No adapter is needed.
- Load one end
Load standard Olympic plates on the 7.5 inch loadable sleeve. The bar is rated to 550 pounds.
- Take the grip
Hold the knurled grip at the end of the loadable sleeve, right behind the plates, and train: presses, rows, squats, deadlifts, rotational work, lunges and split-stance work.
Common questions
- Will the Spann Bar fit my landmine attachment?
- Yes. It fits standard 2-inch landmine sleeves, the spec used on virtually every landmine attachment, corner setup and rack-mounted landmine. No adapters.
- What is the loading capacity?
- 550 pounds on every size, from the 15.5 lb Fresh to the 43 lb Spann.
- Is the Spann Bar suitable for beginners or youth athletes?
- Yes. The Fresh and Melo sizes suit athletes who are new to landmine work, working through rehab, or focused on technique. Their 25 mm grip is more accessible than the 28 mm grip of a standard Olympic bar.
